Radiology phantoms or radiological simulators are highly specialized products used in medical imaging for quality control, equipment calibration, dosimetry and positioning education. They are ideal equipment for radiological laboratories of Medical Universities as well as schools educating in the field of radiology techniques. The main types of radiological phantoms are:
- anthropomorphic
- calibration
Radiological phantoms application, types the wide spectrum of applications of radiological phantoms includes quality control and calibration of equipment, dosimetry as well as education in the field of positioning.
Radiological phantoms - anthropomorphic: These are patient simulating objects made of materials with tissue properties similar to those of normal biological organisms. Due to their accessibility and similarity to real patients, radiological - anthropomorphic phantoms can be used for various tasks. Instead of imaging multiple patients, anthropomorphic phantoms can be used for trial and error to assess optimal use of radiation, for example in new protocols or image reconstruction techniques 1-3. Another purpose of these phantoms is to teach positioning in order to perform and correctly image. On the same premise, radiological - anthropomorphic phantoms can be used to teach personnel various imaging techniques or exposure factors. Recent advances in 3D printing technology are improving the development of radiological, anthropomorphic phantoms to better mimic tissue. Radiological - calibration phantoms
The radiological - calibration phantom is often a cylinder or plate with densities of already known values. They are used in quality control to ensure that the images reconstruct the imaged phantom to the correct density values. A deviation from these values may indicate the need to service the imaging equipment. Both human and veterinary phantoms are available on the market. They are mainly divided into full and partial. Among the comprehensive models there are full-size ones, resembling a human or a specific animal (e.g. a dog). These partials include models of skulls, limbs, torso, or individual internal organs. Each of the models has its own unique application depending on the specifications and needs of the customer.
