Anatomical Models - Stomatology/Teeth

Anatomical models of teeth are ideal teaching tools for dental students, as well as students training to become hygienists or dental assistants. Types of teeth in the mouth:

Each tooth in the human mouth has a specific role or function. We distinguish:

  • Incisors - teeth number one and two.
  • Fangs - threes.
  • Premolars - teeth five and four.
  • Molars - teeth six and seven.
  • Wisdom teeth - wisdom teeth that appear between the ages of 17 and 21. They often cause a lot of problems because they do not fit into the arch and grow incorrectly. They are also most susceptible to tooth decay and spoil quickly.
  • Nine teeth - supernumerary teeth that are a deviation from the norm and require dental intervention. They often grow in the extension of the arch or beyond it. They grow in secret, only to show symptoms such as headache, trismus, facial swelling and high fever before revealing themselves.

Anatomical structure of teeth:

The tooth consists of three parts: the crown (this is what we see in the mouth), the neck (surrounded by the gum), and the root (which attaches the whole thing to the alveolar process).
Inside the tooth there is a chamber and a root canal.
  • The substances that make up these structures are:
  • Tooth enamel - this is the highly mineralized part, located on the outermost part of the tooth and surrounding the entire crown structure. Up to 95% of it consists of inorganic parts, which makes it the hardest substance in the human body. If you look under a microscope, enamel closely resembles the structure of glass - tightly packed crystals of a substance called hydroxyapatite are separated by spaces called pores, filled with water and organic components. When cariogenic bacteria begin their invasion, the acids produced by them dissolve the crystals, causing the pores to enlarge. This, in turn, allows the bacteria to penetrate deeper and deeper and continue the destruction process. This is how the vicious circle closes.
  • Dentin - located slightly deeper, is less durable than enamel. This is due to its structure, in which only 70% are inorganic ingredients. They are adjacent to cells called odontoblasts, collagen fibers and ground substance. All these elements, carefully arranged, create regular structures such as: dentinal tubules, peritubular and intertubular dentin. Unfortunately, cariogenic bacteria quickly cope with the few hydroxyapatite crystals, also using the empty spaces of the dentinal tubules to spread.
  • Tooth cementum is the least calcified hard tissue of the tooth and is most susceptible to destruction. However, because cement builds the root, under natural conditions it does not come into contact with the external environment. However, there are cases (periodontal disease, gum recession in older people) when it is exposed to harmful factors.
  • Tooth pulp - which is a highly vascularized and innervated gelatinous connective tissue, fills the tooth chamber and root canals. Thanks to numerous cells of the immune system, it has a defensive function. In turn, the rich vascularization provides nutrients to the cells, and the abundant innervation allows for ongoing monitoring of the tooth's condition.
